titleOfInvention Acidic colloids in fine particle systems used in papermaking
abstract SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A microparticulate system for use as a capture and drainage aid in making alkaline and acidic paper products comprises HMW flocculant polymer (6), acidic colloid (7), and a coagulant or MMW flocculant (5). The acidic colloid (7) comprises an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer or copolymer of melamine aldehyde, preferably melamine formaldehyde, and comprises from 0.0005% by weight based on the dry weight of solids in the furnish. It is present in amounts up to 0.5% by weight. The HMW flocculant polymer (6) can be added to the stock or furnish after the fan pump; and before the pressure screen (2); the acidic colloid (7) can be added after the pressure screen (2). The coagulant / MMW flocculant (5) added to the stock can be added before the fan pump (1). Alternatively, this order of chemical addition can be varied, ie the acidic colloid (7) can be added before or after the fan pump (1) or before the pressurized screen (2). The addition of a fine particle system to the furnish improves capture, drainage and sheet formation during papermaking.
