abstract SUMMARY An apparatus and method for reducing the occurrence of noise in a disk drive (100). The seek is performed on the disk (106) from the initial track to the target track with reference to a speed profile table (304) that provides a series of required speeds indicating the desired speed at which the head is decelerated to the target track. (120) is moved. During a seek, a current (300) is provided to the actuator motor (116) to accelerate the head from the initial track in relation to a table (310, 312, 314, 316) that stores an open loop current command value. The gain convergence block (318) increments the servo gain (236) to smoothly transition from open loop operation to closed loop operation. Thereafter, the head is decelerated by providing a current related to the velocity error and the current command value from the current profile table (306) defining the deceleration of the head using the maximum current.
