abstract (57) Abstract The microcontroller (M) includes a direct memory access unit (116) for compressing and decompressing data and transferring data from one memory block to another memory block. More specifically, word-sized data is read, one byte is discarded, and stored as sequential byte-sized data. This may be used in conjunction with an extended read and write asynchronous serial port (148) that stores status information along with the data. Once the status information has been processed, the status is stripped by performing a "compressed" DMA.
