titleOfInvention | Agonists of metabototropic glutamate receptor and uses thereof |
abstract | (57) Abstract Astrocytes protect neurons from exotoxin-induced damage by maintaining low levels of extracellular glutamate ([Glu] 0 ). Glutamate uptake by suppressed astrocytes has been implicated in acute and chronic neurological conditions, including Parkinson's disease. This patent provides evidence that [Glu] 0 is feedback-regulated through the activation of metabototropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), particularly the Group II mGluRs. In addition, the ACPD effect is mimicked by glutamate, the results suggest that astrocyte glutamate transport is dynamically regulated by mGluRs, which acts as a sensor for [Glu] 0 changes. . Therefore, agonists of the mGluR receptor are effective drugs to regulate extracellular glutamate levels and protect neurons. |
