titleOfInvention Sheath-core bicomponent fibers and tobacco filters and cigarettes made therefrom
abstract (57) A cigarette filter element is manufactured using a bicomponent fiber comprising a core of a thermoplastic material, preferably polypropylene, and a sheath of a mixture of the core-forming material and an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. This element can be incorporated into tobacco filter products, such as filtered cigarettes. By adding a large amount of core-forming material to the ethylene-vinyl acetate used to form the sheath, the problem of polymer build-up in the molding die, which occurs when using conventional filter forming equipment, is avoided. Furthermore, the mixing of the sheath-forming polymer improves the adhesion between the sheath and the core of the bicomponent fiber, and the use of polypropylene improves the hardness of the resulting tobacco filter element.
