| abstract |
A method and apparatus for rerouting a connection in a data communication network based on detection of a failure or other undesirable characteristic using a user connection monitoring function. After a connection managed by a control plane is established, the state of the characteristics of the connection is monitored using a user connection monitoring function. In one embodiment, the user connection monitoring function includes an operation and management (O AM) including the use of cells. When it is determined that one or more states of the selected property being monitored is unacceptable, control plane rerouting for that connection is initiated. Selected characteristics that can be monitored using the user connection monitoring function include, for example, continuity, data corruption, data loss, latency, and incorrect insertion of data. Rerouting initiated in response to unacceptable characteristics can be hard rerouting or soft rerouting. |
