Biological indicator for sterilization with dual buffer system |
abstract |
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for preventing color reversal of a dye as an indicator in a biological indicator. SOLUTION: The dye as the indicator device is discolored when microorganisms capable of living after the sterilization treatment are present because the microorganisms produce acidic by-products when metabolized to the growth medium. I do. It is known that this dye can discolor and return to its original color after completion of the sterilization process due to leaching or diffusion of basic impurities into the growth medium. The method and apparatus of the present invention employs a dual buffer system, wherein the first buffer operates at a high pH value to adjust for pH fluctuations at the start of the sterilization process; The second buffer operates at a low pH value to minimize fluctuations in the pH value after completion of the sterilization process. In order to maximize the speed and sensitivity of the biological indicator, a smaller amount of a high pH buffer is used than a low pH buffer. |
