abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for protecting a lean-burn, catalyst-based emission control system. A method, apparatus and fuel composition for catalytic aftertreatment system protection and a method for catalytic aftertreatment system protection in a lean burn system are disclosed. An effective amount of a scavenger is introduced into the combustion chamber to complex with the combustion byproducts of the catalyst poison and improve the durability of the emission system. In a preferred embodiment, the scavenger is an organometallic compound that imparts additional desirable properties to the fuel.
