abstract (57) [Summary] [Constitution] General formula (1) between at least one transparent substrate having an electrode layer (R 1 and R 2 : an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an alkoxyl group, an alkenyl group or an alkenyloxy group having 2 to 12 carbon atoms, a ring A: which may be substituted by F or CH 3 4-phenylene group or trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group, B ring and C ring: 1,4-phenylene group optionally substituted by F or CH 3 , X 1 and X 2 : single bond, —COO -, -OC O-, -CH 2 CH 2- , -C≡C-, -CH 2 O- or -OCH 2- , n: 0 or 1, *: a light-scattering type liquid crystal device having a liquid crystal layer containing a compound represented by the formula (*: optically active center) and a transparent solid substance. This liquid crystal device can be driven in a reverse mode, is driven at a low voltage, has a small hysteresis width, and has excellent electro-optical characteristics.
