abstract (57) [Summary] [PROBLEMS] To detect electrode-tissue contact. A system for detecting electrode-tissue contact comprises a multi-electrode catheter having a position sensor and a plurality of contact electrodes. The catheter preferably further comprises a reference electrode, which is preferably protected from contact with tissue. The system further includes a signal generator for transmitting a test signal to each of the contact electrodes and the reference electrode. Tissue contact is detected by comparing the signal between the tip electrode and the return electrode to the signal between the reference electrode and the return electrode. Ablation energy may be provided to the contact electrode if contact of the electrode with tissue is detected.
