titleOfInvention | Continuous production of functionalized polymers |
abstract | (57) [Abstract] A) A liquid containing a polymer and a gas containing a functionalizing agent are continuously fed into a dispersion zone operating in a laminar flow mode in which the liquid and the gas are mixed with high intensity under functionalizing conditions. Through which the gas substantially dissolves or disperses in the liquid for functionalization and stabilizes the mixing such that the shear rate is less than 5 s -1 for less than 30% of the residence time (B) continuously passing through a mixing zone operating in a laminar flow mode with low intensity mixing under functionalization conditions, with a shear rate effective to form a stable gas-liquid dispersion. A method of functionalizing a polymer, wherein the method is performed at a shear rate effective to further functionalize the gas by further dissolving it in a liquid, and (C) recovering the functionalized polymer. This method can be used to carbonylate unsaturated polymers, especially by reacting the unsaturated polymer with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst and co-reactants (water, H 2 S, alcohol, thiol, etc.) Useful for making functionalized polymers having carboxy (thio) acid or carboxy (thio) ester functionalities. |
