titleOfInvention System for monitoring fluid and electrolyte balance in surgical and critically ill patients
abstract SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is a computer-aided system that tracks a patient's liquid volume and electrolyte (cation and anion concentration) balance during an extended period of time from pre-surgery to recovery. Helps maintain a good balance. The system includes an automatic sensor (14) for measuring the volume of liquid administered to and withdrawn from the patient. Further, the system preferably includes a sensor for measuring the electrolyte concentration in the liquid when the attending physician is unavailable for evaluation. The system helps the attending physician create a baseline of the patient's fluid, determine the electrolyte value, and continuously tracks the actual value of the fluid that is dispensed into and discharged from the patient. Upon detection, beyond the limits of the balance condition, the system alerts and suggests a treatment activity to the attending physician.
