abstract (57) Abstract The majority of Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium clinical isolates fall into two and three groups, respectively. Separate antigens are associated with each of the five groups. Enterococcal antigens are readily obtained from strains of E. faecalis and E. faecium and can induce the production of protective antibodies. Thus, these antigens are useful in vaccines to protect against infection by clinically significant (pathogenic) enterococcal isolates. Antigens and antibodies formed against these antigens are also useful in diagnostic assays.
