abstract (57) SUMMARY Disclosed are methods of screening for cancer or treating cancer or autoimmune disorders. In aspects of the invention, the screening method is based on the detection of complement C3 or a complement C3-related protein found to be associated with the presence of cancer, or a nucleic acid molecule encoding same. Further screening methods are based on the use of complement regulator factor I or DAF, or complement receptor 1 or 3. Preferred embodiments of the method include detection based on immunological properties, physical properties, enzymatic properties, and combinations thereof, or detection of nucleic acid molecules encoding an antigen based on nucleic acid amplification.
