abstract | (57) [Summary]nThe present invention provides methods for screening test compounds for their ability to activate or suppress estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) -mediated gene activation at the AP1 site. In particular, the method includes providing a cell comprising a construct having a promoter that includes an estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), an AP1 protein, and an AP1 site that regulates expression of a first reporter gene. The cells are contacted with a test compound to detect a change in the level of expression of the reporter gene, which change activates the transcription, inactivates transcription, or has no effect at the AP1 site.
