titleOfInvention Plasma jet source using inertial electrostatic confinement discharge plasma
abstract (57) Abstract The structure of an electrostatic ion jet source based on inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC) technology. According to the present invention, the inertial electrostatic confinement jet source uses a configuration that is compatible with both ion generation and acceleration in a vacuum chamber. The device employs a characteristic spherical structure, a grid with enlarged openings, a channel guiding grid, and an electron generation / confinement method. Prior art structures must produce small diameter jets. Virtual cathode formation in a high density region, combined with a locally distorted cathode grid potential field, extracts accelerating ions in the form of a strong quasi-neutral ion jet. This device ejects materials in jet form for use as industrial plasma spraying, industrial material processing, waste disposal, welding or cutting of materials, or plasma deposition. The present invention can also provide propulsion for spacecraft propulsion, particularly for ion jet propulsion systems. An inertial electrostatic confinement structure with a discharge plasma is used to generate ions that accelerate from the device in the form of a plasma jet and create a motive force when ejected.
