titleOfInvention | Methods and compositions for controlling biofouling using sulfamic acid |
abstract | (57) Abstract The present invention relates to a method for preventing bacteria from adhering to a surface that may be submerged. The method comprises contacting a surface, which may be submerged in liquid, with an effective amount of at least one sulfamic acid or salt thereof to prevent bacteria from adhering to the surface. The invention also relates to a method for controlling biological contamination in an aqueous system. This method adds an amount of at least one sulfamic acid or salt thereof effective to prevent bacteria from adhering to submerged surfaces in an aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the pollutants. The sulfamic acid used in the method of the present invention has the formula: R 1 R 2 NS (O) 2 (OH). In this formula, R 1 and R 2 are independently hydrogen, a C 4 -C 20 alkyl group or a cyclohexyl group. However, R 1 and R 2 are not both hydrogen. Alternatively, R 1 and R 2 can be taken together with N to form a 5- to 8-membered heterocycle having the formula (I). The heterocycle, X is O, NH or CH 2. The salt of sulfamic acid can be an acid salt or a quaternized sulfamate. The present invention also relates to a composition comprising sulfamic acid or a salt thereof which can be used in the above-mentioned method. The composition comprises at least one sulfamic acid or a salt thereof in an amount effective to prevent bacteria from adhering to surfaces that can be submerged or submerged surfaces. |
