titleOfInvention | Improved process for producing alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactants and products thereof |
abstract | (57) Abstract The present invention relates to the field of a method for producing an alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant. The process involves a combination of two essential steps: de-linearization and alkylation. The de-straightening step chosen here introduces a special type of limited branching into the aliphatic hydrocarbons having 10 or more carbon atoms, but not more than about 16 carbon atoms. Hydrocarbons include suitable hydrocarbon chain length in the detergent manufacturing, for example, olefins having a C 10 -C 14,, or the corresponding paraffin. The second essential step is an alkylation step using hydrocarbons to monoalkylate benzene catalyzed by an alkylation catalyst with an internal isomer selectivity of 0 to about 40 or less. Such an alkylation catalyst preferably comprises a porous zeolite-containing solid that is at least partially crystalline, the zeolite having a moderate acidity and mesopore size. Preferred alkylation catalysts include certain, at least partially dealuminated, non-fluorinated mordenites. The process further comprises sulfonating, neutralizing and formulating the resulting improved alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant into a daily product. The present invention also relates to products of the present process, including improved surfactants and daily cleaning products containing the same. |
