titleOfInvention D Simultaneous production of energy and helium from 2
abstract (57) [Summary]nIt has been discovered that energy can be reliably generated by contacting gaseous deuterium with a particularly active metal catalyst at elevated temperatures. The product obtained from this process is helium of mass (4). Therefore, a reaction of D + D → He-4 + 24MeV appears. Only a small fraction of the metal "hydrogenated" catalysts are active in this process, and it was not possible to predict in advance which catalyst candidates would have activity. Therefore, a simple sieving test was devised to identify particularly active catalysts. The most promising catalysts used in this process are platinum group metals supported on certain supports. Although palladium is a convenient metal, platinum and possibly other PGMs also have activity. It is envisioned that this procedure can be scaled up by performing steam plumbing through the catalyst bed and removing heat generated in the form of steam, producing energy on a commercial scale.
