Polymer blends with controlled morphology |
abstract |
(57) [Summary]nA thermoplastic polymer blend composition comprising a thermoplastic matrix resin phase having essentially no cross-linking and a dispersed silane-grafted elastomer phase produces a thermoplastic resin and elastomer having similar viscosities at the temperatures used for melt mixing. Prepared by a multi-step process, starting with mixing. A catalyst that promotes silane crosslinking, branching, or both is not required, but should be added to the molten mixed phase when it is in the molten state or after the molten mixed phase has been recovered in the solid state Is preferred. The molten mixed phase and optional catalyst are then exposed to moisture before or after the molten mixed phase is converted to a molded article, causing branching and crosslinking within the domains of the dispersed elastomer phase. Crosslinking and branching increase the molecular weight of the elastomer and stabilize the shape of the dispersed domains. The elastomer phase can contain a non-elastomeric polymer. Alternatively, a non-grafted elastomeric phase can be included in the thermoplastic polymer blend composition. |
