abstract (57) [Summary] A novel imide / amide ether and alcohol compound represented by the formula (I), wherein R 2 is —H, alkyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, benzyl, pyridylmethyl, or alkoxymethyl, and R 4 is —CX—, -CH 2 or -CH 2 CX- in which X is O (oxygen) or S (sulfur), and n is 1, 2 or 3. These compounds are inhibitors of cytokinins, including TGFα, and can be used to attack cachexia, endotoxin shock, arthritis, asthma, and retroviral replication. A representative example is 3-phthalimido-3- (3 ', 4'-dimethoxyphenyl) propan-1-ol.
