Preformed polymer coating method and product |
abstract |
SUMMARY A method is disclosed for coating a solid support (eg, a capillary or chromatographic packing) to modify the properties of the support surface for separating components in a fluid stream. The method of the present invention comprises the steps of: (a) covalently bonding a coupling agent (containing a functional group capable of generating a free radical site under hydrogen extraction conditions) to the surface of a support as a uniform layer; Contacting the covalently-coupled coupling agent layer with a preformed polymer containing a generally saturated carbon backbone containing a leaving group in the presence of at least one of the leaving groups To form a free radical binding site that is covalently bonded to the coupling agent layer on the particle, and that at least a few of the preformed polymer are cross-linked via the free radical carbon site to form the solid support. Forming a three-dimensional polymer network coating on the body. Alternatively, the coating is applied directly to the organic solid support without an intermediate coupling agent. |
