(57) [Summary]nThe novel vaccine composition combines a protein or peptide antigen, optionally with added hydrophobic material, and an immune enhancing membrane carrier. Both of these preserve the antigenic integrity of the protein or peptide epitopes and at the same time enhance their immunogenicity. Administration of the composition to a subject elicits a protective immune response, including secreted neutralizing antibodies present at various mucosal sites within the body. The vaccine and processes for using it are intended for use against pathogenic organisms, especially those that produce sexual or mucosal infections. Such organisms include bacteria and enveloped viruses, especially HIV-1. |
