titleOfInvention Improved microphone for implantable hearing aids
abstract The implantable sealed microphone (50) has a diaphragm (52) with a thin central region (54) surrounded by a thicker rim (56). One side of the sheet-like electrical material (72) has the diaphragm coupled to (52) and the other side is in contact with the roughened plate (82). The rim (56) is coupled to the housing (112), thereby hermetically surrounding the electret (72) and the plate (82). The microphone (50) further has an electrical connector (94) coupling both the electret (72) and the plate (82) to the input of an amplifier (30) included in the implantable hearing aid system (10). Preferably, the microphone (50) is integrated into the sealed electronic module (100) along with an energy storage device such as a battery for operating the amplifier (30) and the hearing aid system (10). With such a configuration, the diaphragm (52) of the microphone forms the surface of the housing (112) of the electronic module. An electrical connector (134) couples the output signal from the amplifier (30) to the microactuator (32) of the implantable hearing aid system (10).
