(57) [Problem] To produce a low molecular weight polystyrene sulfonate from a polystyrene resin (waste material). SOLUTION: A water-soluble polymer compound can be produced by sulfonating a polystyrene resin (waste material) and subjecting it to ozone treatment. Here, the polystyrene resin is A styrene unit containing 20 to 100 mol% is used. The obtained water-soluble polymer compound contains a sulfone group in an amount of 40 to 200 mol% based on the styrene unit. The molecular weight (Mw) of the water-soluble polymer compound is 2,000 to 50,000. |
