abstract (57) [Summary] (with correction) [Problem] An operating temperature range is around room temperature, a temperature range is wide, a response by an applied voltage is fast, a desired tilt angle (a tilt angle of a liquid crystal long axis from a liquid crystal layer normal to a liquid crystal layer). The present invention provides a novel compound capable of providing a liquid crystal device having good alignment in a cell and a driving voltage within an appropriate range, and a liquid crystal material, a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal device using the same. SOLUTION: A phenylacetylene compound represented by general formula 1, for example, formula 16, a liquid crystal material comprising the same, a liquid crystal composition containing the same, a liquid crystal element using the liquid crystal material or the liquid crystal composition.
