Compositions for terminating free radical emulsion polymerization and stabilizing latexes made from the polymerization |
abstract |
[PROBLEMS] To not only effectively stop a free radical emulsion polymerization reaction, but also to provide an improved stability to a rubber latex obtained without adversely affecting safety, health and environment. Providing a stopping composition. A terminating composition comprising at least one hydrophilic radical scavenger (ie, terminator) and at least one hydrophobic radical scavenger. The composition is preferably intended for use in a rubber latex emulsification process. These compositions show excellent performance not only as free-radical emulsion polymerization terminators but also as stabilizers for the corresponding polymers. Thus, these compositions prevent additional polymerization in the particles without the need for additional stabilizers even after vapor stripping the polymer. They prevent such polymerization without the use of chemicals having a high safety, health or environmental risk. |
