PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved composition and method for pretreating aluminum prior to electroplating. SOLUTION: The present invention provides an aqueous composition comprising an acid, an oxidizing agent, and a halogenated compound as an optional component. This composition is useful in a method for efficiently removing smut resulting from the etching step of an aluminum pretreatment process.
