PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst having high selectivity for an objective substance and little deterioration of performance over time in the production of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile by gas phase catalytic ammoxidation of propane or isobutane. SOLUTION: Propane or isobutane is subjected to gas-phase catalytic ammoxidation reaction using a catalyst containing Mo, V, Nb and Sb and further containing a specific fifth component (Re, Hf) to produce acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile.
