PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst capable of obtaining an alcohol in a high yield using any carboxylic acid as a raw material regardless of the type of the carboxylic acid, and using the catalyst. Provided is a method for producing alcohols by direct hydrogenation of a carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: A catalyst comprising activated carbon produced through a step of activating with zinc chloride as a carrier and supporting ruthenium and tin, and an alcohol which hydrogenates a carboxylic acid with hydrogen in the presence of water using the catalyst.
