PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a polyester (PBT) having a low carboxyl terminal group concentration and improved hydrolysis resistance. SOLUTION: The process for producing a polyester of the present invention comprises the steps of: using a combination of a titanium compound and a tin compound or a single system of a tin compound as a catalyst; A method for producing a polyester in which an esterification reaction or a transesterification reaction is performed with a diol having a diol as a main component, followed by a polycondensation reaction, wherein an alkaline compound is added at an optional stage before the completion of the polycondensation reaction.
