abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing hinokitiol by synthesizing 1-isopropylcyclopentadiene from cyclopentadiene which is easily available, adding dichloroketene thereto, and decomposing it in the presence of a base. To provide a method for producing isopropylcyclopentadiene at low cost and with high selectivity. SOLUTION: A cyclopentadienyl metal is prepared from cyclopentadiene and at least one of an alkali metal or an alkali metal hydride, and the cyclopentadienyl metal and an isopropylating agent are mixed with a product isopropylcyclopentadiene. The reaction is carried out in the presence of an aprotic polar solvent forming a phase to obtain isopropylcyclopentadiene.
