abstract | (57) [Summary] [PROBLEMS] To achieve gradation display. SOLUTION: A chiral smectic liquid crystal having a structure as shown in FIG. 2 (in-plane chevron structure) is used for a liquid crystal panel. The plane chevron structure, one side layer normal direction 4 with respect to the direction R of the uniaxial aligning treatment and the first region A 1 tilted (left side in the figure), the layer normal direction 4 of the uniaxial aligning treatment made from the second region a 2 Metropolitan inclined (right side in the figure) the other side with respect to the direction R, in any of the areas a 1, a 2, the direction in which liquid crystal molecules are substantially along the direction R of the uniaxial aligning treatment ( Code 6 (See Reference).
