abstract |
(57) Abstract: A novel device for providing an inflation fluid for inflating a vehicle occupant protection device is provided. An inflator (2) that provides inflation fluid (2) to inflate an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14). 2) has a container (30) for storing the inflation fluid under pressure, the container having an outlet passage (80) for discharging the inflation fluid. A rupturable closure member (92) secured to the container blocks the flow of inflation fluid through the outlet passage. The support (100) for the rupturable closure defines a chamber (100) adjacent to the rupturable closure. The rupturable closure has a first portion (122) that deforms into the chamber due to the pressure of the inflation fluid, and a second ring-shaped portion (124) surrounding the first portion. The starter (98), when activated, ruptures the closure member by shearing the first portion from the second portion. |
