The present invention provides two or more layers of polymerized cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) material having a planar orientation along a cholesteric helical axis oriented substantially perpendicular to the layer plane. The present invention provides a method for producing a multilayer cholesteric thin film having a cholesteric helical pitch of an adjacent layer changed by controlled movement of a non-polymerizable chiral material existing between each layer. The present invention also relates to a multilayer cholesteric thin film obtained by such a method, and a multilayer cholesteric thin film manufactured by such a method and this method, by using a polarizing plate, a compensation film, an alignment film, a color filter or a holographic element such as a holographic element. It relates to devices, cosmetics and liquid crystal pigments, for use in decoration and forgery prevention applications.
