(57) [Summary]nWhen substantially linear ethylene polymers, such as ethylene / octene binary polymers and ethylene / propylene / diene modified polymers, are added to oily materials, such as lubricating oils, in amounts that modify viscosity. Also provided is a material having a viscosity index that exceeds that of the material alone. Substantially linear ethylene polymers prepared by the catalysis of constrained linkages may be grafted with one or more unsaturated organic compounds having ethylenic unsaturation, such as maleic anhydride. The grafted polymer may be further functionalized, for example, by reaction with an alcohol or amine compound. When subjected to a shearing action, either before or after the addition of the oleaginous material, the substantially linear ethylene polymer improves the shear stability of the oleaginous composition. Whether substantially grafted, grafted and further reacted or ungrafted, the substantially linear ethylene polymer is an additive to compositions such as those used in greases, cable filling compounds and cosmetics. It is equally effective as a thickener. In addition, substantially linear ethylene polymers provide effective results when mixed with other components of conventional oil-based material compositions. |
