The present invention relates to ionic liquids that react with a metal in an initial oxidation state that is lower than its highest valence oxidation state to oxidize the metal to a higher oxidation state. The present invention relates to a method for dissolving a metal. The metal in the first oxidation state may be in the form of those compounds or may be an irradiated nuclear fuel comprising fission products similar to UO 2 and / or PuO 2 . Generally, the ionic liquid is a nitrate-based, eg, pyridinium or imidazolium nitrate-substituted, or a liquid containing a Bronsted acid or a flank acid that enhances the oxidation performance of the nitrate. Suitable acids here are HNO 3 , H 2 SO 4 and [NO + ]. It is an embodiment of the present invention that the ionic liquids are imidazolium nitrates and certain pyridinium nitrates. |
