titleOfInvention | Production of surfactant esters |
abstract | (57) [Summary]nA catalyst system containing a reducing phosphorus oxo acid, especially a phosphorus oxo acid containing phosphorous acid, and a strong base of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, especially an oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, is treated with an acid: base molar ratio. Using 0.9: 1 to 1.7: 1, the concentration of the catalyst system about 1.5 to about 30%, especially 3 to 12% by weight of sorbitol, the fatty acid sorbitan obtained by direct reaction of sorbitol with fatty acids. Esters can be less colored than conventional industrial bulk processes without the use of conventional standard activated carbon and product bleaching. This ester is further reacted with an alkylene oxide to produce a derivative, especially a polysorbate. The esters and polyalkyleneoxy derivatives are useful surfactants for various applications. Less colored products made without the use of activated carbon or bleaching are attractive for personal care. |
