titleOfInvention Document scope testing in search engines
abstract SUMMARY A method and mechanism for responding to queries in a document and folder hierarchy system is disclosed. In response to the query, a set of documents is retrieved based on specified criteria. Only documents in the set that match the specified scope are returned in the result set. A scope test is performed on each of the documents in the set, by obtaining the document identifier of each document and using that document identifier to obtain the document identifier of its parent folder. The parent folder's document identifier is used as a key to the data structure, which stores a flag indicating whether the parent folder is within the specified scope. If a parent folder's flag indicates that the parent folder is in scope, documents with that parent are returned in the result set. If the flag indicates that the current document is not in scope, the document is not returned. If the entry corresponding to the key is not in the data structure, prefix matching is performed on the parent folder to determine if it is in scope. Thereafter, the scope information of the parent folder is added to the data structure as a flag indexed by the document identifier of the parent folder.
