abstract | (57) [Summary]nHerbicidal 1-alkyl-4- (2-chloro-3-alkoxy-4-alkylsulfonylbenzoyl) -5-hydroxypyrazole compounds and 1-halo-2-chloro-3-alkoxy-4-alkylsulfonylbenzene compounds and 2 -Chloro-3-alkoxy-4-alkylsulfonylbenzoic acid compounds were prepared in high yield by reaction of the corresponding 3-chloro compounds with alkali metal alkoxide compounds. A 1-halo-2-chloro-3-alkoxy-4-alkylsulfonylbenzene and a 1-halo-2,3-dichloro-4-alkylsulfonylbenzene compound are converted to a palladium II salt in the presence of a trihydrocarbylphosphine complex type catalyst. The reaction with carbon oxide and water, alcohol or 1-alkyl-5-hydroxypyrazole compound, respectively, results in a hydroxycarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl or 1-alkyl-5-hydroxypyrazole-4-carbonyl substituent in place of the 1-halo substituent.
