abstract | (57) Summary In a method (10) for monitoring a patient suffering from chronic congestive heart failure, a high frequency current is passed between electrodes (20) applied to two limbs of the patient. Currents, voltages and phase angles between the measured currents and voltages are measured to allow calculation of congestive heart failure (CHF) symptom values (18). The calculated CHF symptom value is then compared to a reference value set when the patient is under known stable conditions. When the difference between the calculated CHF symptom value and the reference value is outside the set tolerance, an intervention is initiated. CHF signature values may include resistance, reactance, impedance, total body water and extracellular water. Further, the symptom value may include a indicative number indicating the hydration status of the patient. |
