titleOfInvention | Calculation of radiotherapy dose using whole-particle Monte Carlo transport |
abstract | (57) [Summary] Using the three-dimensional Monte Carlo transport (19), the actual radiation dose absorbed into the body is calculated. Neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, helium-3, alpha particles, photons, electrons and positrons are transported in a fully coupled manner using the Monte Carlo All Particle Method (MCAPM) (18). Key elements of the invention include computer hardware and software, patient user description, radiation source description, physical database, Monte Carlo transport, and radiation distribution output (15). This facilitates estimating the radiation dose distribution on the Cartesian grid for neutrons, photons, electrons, positrons and heavy charged particles incident on any biological target, with resolutions from a few microns to a few centimeters. The calculations can be extended to estimate the radiation dose distribution on general geometries (non-Cartesian) for biological and / or non-biological media. |
