titleOfInvention Condensate colorimetric nitric oxide analyzer
abstract (57) Abstract: A device for measuring the content of higher nitrogen oxides contained in breath condensate is disclosed. The device has a conduit (7) with an exhalation condenser with an inlet and an outlet (the inlet may be structured to be attached to a mechanical ventilator or the device may be connected to the surrounding atmosphere for direct use by the patient). An inlet assembly providing a one-way entry may be combined with the inlet of the conduit breath condenser; a coolant jacket (6) concentrically surrounding the breath condenser; a gas outlet port; and an outlet of the conduit breath condenser. A sealed sample assay assembly (9) in fluid communication with the sealed sample assay assembly (9). The sample assay assembly comprises: (a) a translucent analytical chamber attached to the outlet for storing condensed fluid and having a reagent introduction port; (b) in fluid communication in tight communication with the reagent introduction port. (C) a flexible element connecting the outlet to the analysis chamber and forming a part of the reagent chamber, the flexibility of the element being between the outlet and the analysis chamber; A flexible element adapted to close communication and to contract the reagent chamber to deliver a controlled amount of condensate and reagents to the analysis chamber. This device is disposable and inexpensive and is used to collect human breath for use in liquid and gas phase nitric oxide colorimetric assays and is useful for diagnosing airway inflammation.
