(57) [Summary]nDisclosed are methods for selecting plants and plant tissue cultures having increased levels of secondary metabolites. The method uses a clonal organogenous tissue culture system derived from cells of a plant belonging to the Labiatae family. The embryos of the cultured tissue are contacted with mucous, non-pathogenic bacterial cells and cultured for a period of time. Clonal lines that exhibit resistance to bacterial cells have elevated levels of secondary metabolites. It is possible to regenerate the cultured tissue derived from such a line to obtain a plant used for more efficiently producing essential oils for food and medicine. |
