(57) Abstract: A polyol is produced using a double metal cyanide catalyst by an improved method of continuously adding an initiator during the polymerization of an epoxide. The method comprises a continuously added initiator (S c ) and, optionally, an initially charged initiator (S i ). The continuously added initiator makes up at least about 2 equivalent% of the total initiator used. This method allows the use of water and low molecular weight polyol initiators in DMC catalyzed polyol synthesis. In addition, this method results in polyether polyols having reduced levels of high molecular weight polyol tails that can adversely affect polyurethane foam processing. |
