abstract Abstract: A radially extensible stent is disclosed that is formed from a thin wire (10) bent in the form of a snake-like flat ribbon and is helically wound around a mandrel (14). The stent is formed into a cylindrical sleeve (18) for mounting on a balloon catheter (38) and transluminal insertion into a tube (35). The free end (20) of the wire (10) is looped or wrapped around the helix at positions (40) (42) (44). The wire 10 forming the stent is made of an alloy selected from the group consisting of Pt-Ir or Au-N and has a tensile strength of about 155,000 to 175,000 PSI.
