titleOfInvention Ultrasonic energy delivery device and method
abstract (57) Abstract: An energy delivery device and method for controlling the frequency of power driving an ultrasonic device (24) to achieve efficient power delivery. During operation of an ultrasound device that delivers power to a patient site (16), the device and method automatically sweeps the drive power over a frequency range, looking for series and parallel resonance frequencies and searching for these frequencies. And lock the power generator at the average frequency to drive the crystal. The frequency sweeping procedure begins automatically when the ultrasonic crystal is placed at the patient site and the power generator operator presses the power on switch to apply power. Thus, the method of tuning the power generator occurs when the crystal is at the temperature of the patient's site and is transparent to the operator. The use of a biocompatible layer outside the crystal increases its bandwidth and intensity. By attaching the temperature sensor (28) to the crystal, the temperature of the crystal can be monitored, and the drive level of the power generator that controls the temperature of the crystal can be controlled.
