(57) [Summary] [Objective] When alkylating benzene with an alkylating agent to produce a monoalkylbenzene such as ethylbenzene or kumen, the selectivity of the monoalkylated product is increased, and the production of the dialkylated product is suppressed. Provided is a method for reducing by-products such as a diphenylalkyl compound. Further, the present invention provides a catalyst which can be operated without a decrease in catalytic activity even during long-term operation. SOLUTION: When alkylating benzene, the benzene is reacted in a pressurized liquid phase in the presence of a mordenite catalyst having a high silica / alumina ratio which has been ion-exchanged with polyvalent metal ions. |
