abstract (57) [Summary] In a normally black liquid crystal display device, there is provided a liquid crystal display device of high image quality which has less display unevenness due to heat generation from a light source or a circuit and can achieve both high contrast. The liquid crystal device includes a pair of substrates, a spacer interposed therebetween, and a liquid crystal layer formed by filling a liquid crystal material between the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal material has a drive voltage threshold change ΔVth when the temperature changes by 10 ° C. It has a characteristic of less than 25 mV, The change Δ (Δε) in the dielectric anisotropy when the temperature changes by Δ (Δε) ≧ 1.45- (Tni / 100) (where T ni is the temperature at which the liquid crystal material changes from a liquid crystal phase to an isotropic phase), and the liquid crystal material contains a liquid crystal compound having a cyano group at a content of 35% by weight or less.
