abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording material containing a novel squarylium compound as a dye, a silver halide photographic light-sensitive material, a heat-developable light-sensitive material, a heat-developable image forming method, and a novel squarylium compound. And a method for forming a thermal recording image using the thermal recording material, and an infrared absorbing composition containing the novel squarylium compound as a dye. A squarylium compound is provided. SOLUTION: The following general formula (1), (2) or (3) A recording material comprising a squarylium compound represented by the formula: [In the general formula (1), at least one of A 1 and A 2 represents a 5- or 6-membered nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic ring. In the general formula (2), at least one of A 3 and A 4 represents a 6-membered nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic ring represented by the following general formula (2 ′).
